In 2008, Federal Fire Codes stated that 20lb propane tanks transported in passenger vehicles must be placed in a secure and upright position. Why? Besides the danger of the propane becoming unstable in the event of an accident, propane can leak in a gaseous form into your car, garage, or other space when it is not upright. This highly flammable and explosive gas expands to over 220 times the space it occupied in the tank, creating an extremely dangerous scenario.
